Sunny becomes entangled in the lives of three troubled women. First is her sister Elizabeth, a self-absorbed neurotic who struggles after her husband leaves her. Next is Julie, an old friend and therapist grappling with her own failing marriage. The third is Mary Lou Goddard, a feminist client who hires Sunny for protection against a stalker. Mary Lou's situation, filled with complexities and dangers, drives the narrative. Sunny identifies the stalker as Lawrence Reeves, a middle-aged misogynist. After a confrontation, Mary Lou's assistant Gretchen is murdered, seemingly due to her resemblance to Mary Lou. Following this, Reeves appears to commit suicide, leaving a confession, prompting the Boston PD to close the case. However, Sunny remains unsatisfied and continues her investigation, which leads her from radical feminism to the seedy world of organized prostitution. As she uncovers a disturbing tale of twisted relationships and rage, the narrative skillfully weaves through three intersecting storylines. Throughout, we gain insight into Sunny Randall's disciplined life, centered on her love for art, her commitment to her career, and her unresolved feelings for ex-husband Richie Burke, whose family is linked to the Irish mob in Boston.
