Communication and cooperation among culturally diverse individuals and organizations are often framed as intercultural, transnational, or cross-border phenomena. However, this perspective may not fully capture the complexities of places like Hong Kong, which has existed as a “marginal man” between East and West since 1842. Serving as a conduit for Western economic and cultural influence in Asia and a gateway for China to the world, Hong Kong exemplifies cultural convergence, contagion, divergence, and hybridization. This book explores the idea that Hong Kong may not simply be a case of “either-or” or a melting pot, but rather a site for the emergence of something entirely new. It investigates the transcultural practices, spheres, and competencies that foster diversity while creating commonality. The work presents findings from a field project conducted by young researchers from diverse cultural and disciplinary backgrounds, analyzing Hong Kong through the lenses of arts, geography, management, media, political science, and sociology. The resulting analysis paints a complex portrait of Hong Kong as a microcosm of transculturality, addressing themes such as the history of its elites, the role of transcultural migrants, the impact of art fairs on societal change, and the dynamics of journalism and management in this unique context.

The concept of Transcultural Leadership is increasingly recognized in both academic and practical contexts. In light of today’s complex economic and societal developments, effective leadership now requires competencies that extend beyond traditional models. Transcultural leadership addresses the challenges posed by globalization and the need for cross-cultural cooperation. This volume explores the current state of research on Transcultural Leadership and its associated competence models, blending innovative theoretical approaches with empirical analyses. It provides a solid foundation for understanding what it means to be a successful leader in the evolving global landscape. Key topics include a competence-based approach to Transcultural Leadership, the relational aspects of transculturality as a leadership style, and methods for operationalizing transcultural competence. Comparative studies on the competencies of biculturals versus monoculturals are also discussed, alongside the focus on commonalities in transculturality. The findings derived from global competence assessments, such as those by PISA, are examined, as well as the role of transcultural management in global firms. Additionally, the volume highlights university education in transcultural competence, exemplified by Global Studies Projects at Zeppelin University.

This book presents findings from a transcultural research group of students and lecturers from Uganda and Germany, who focused on central Ugandan culture and the work of the Hope Development Initiative (HDI). The contributions are categorized into three areas: entrepreneurship, society, and culture, emphasizing community building from a transcultural perspective. The research aims to analyze how community building fosters entrepreneurial opportunities, positively impacting individuals and the community. The introduction by Catherine P. Anena discusses the HDI and the Amolatar District. In the entrepreneurship section, Janine Kaiser explores financing for African hybrid start-ups, while Alexander Shevelov examines the impact of digital transformation on Uganda’s agriculture. Asha Olol investigates how HDI creates value through inclusive female leadership. In the society section, Charlotte Theiss addresses gender imbalances in rural Uganda, and Louisa Singer highlights HDI's role in fostering civil society. Marius Hupperich reviews development measures by state and private players, and a collaborative piece by David Mugambe Mpiima and others discusses farmer groups and ICTs in the Lango region. Catherine P. Anena and Catherine I. Abalo present best practices for promoting women’s sustainable livelihoods through the HDI rice program. In a globalizing world, cooperation across cultures is essential for prosperity and mutual gain. This publication explores the foundations and success factors of such collaboration, particularly in leadership strategies. It compiles insights from the 2017 Transcultural Leadership Summit at Zeppelin University in Germany, which focused on "Learning about Sub-Saharan Africa." The discussions highlighted the region's potential as a future hub of globalization, emphasizing the importance of global value creation and cross-border cooperation. Sub-Saharan Africa presents new opportunities for development and transcultural processes in business and society. The summit encouraged the exchange of ideas on successful partnerships between Sub-Saharan Africa and Germany, showcasing success stories and promoting creativity and open-mindedness—key elements of transculturality. The book includes sections on concepts of good governance and leadership, featuring contributions on transculturality, African leadership theories, and governance challenges. It also presents case studies on empowering women in leadership, inclusive leadership in Botswana, and the factors driving success in South African enterprises. Over the last years, “Creating Shared Value” has become a much discussed concept in business practice as well as in management theory and especially in the context of corporate social responsibility. This book offers a contribution to the current academic discussions on the well-received article of Michael Porter and Marc Kramer in Harvard Business Review in 2011. In the light of the increasing references to the shared value concept, it develops a critical discussion on its fundamentals and its implications for the relationship between economy and society. By that, the book seeks to shed light on the understanding of the role and the nature of the firm in a globalized economy. The result is a collection of interdisciplinary academic reviews which offer interdisciplinary reflections on “Creating Shared Value” to illuminate theoretical, conceptual and practical challenges of the topic. Within the fields of Business Ethics, Theory of the Firm, Management and Philosophy, researcher, students and practitioners will be given a deeper insight on how to approach to the concept in a conceptional and philosophical way.
