Israel Unger wurde 1938 in der westgalizischen Stadt Tarnów geboren. Zusammen mit seinen Eltern und seinem Bruder überlebte er den Holocaust in einem zehn Quadratmeter großen Versteck auf dem Dachboden einer Fabrik. Doch auch nach dem Krieg fühlten sich viele Juden in Polen nicht sicher. Nach dem Pogrom von Kielce im Juli 1946 schickten die Eltern Israel und seinen Bruder nach Frankreich, 1947 folgten sie ihren Kindern. Das prekäre Leben der Familie als Staatenlose endete erst, als 1951 alle zusammen nach Kanada auswandern konnten. Dort wurde Israel Unger ein namhafter Chemiker, Professor und Dekan an der Universität von New Brunswick.
