Focusing on the impact of civil society organizations, the book examines the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Russia, highlighting its evolution into a critical social, economic, and political issue. It emphasizes the alarming statistics reported by UNAIDS, noting that Russia was confronting the largest HIV/AIDS crisis in Europe, with approximately 980,000 individuals living with HIV in 2009. The study offers insights into the challenges and responses surrounding this public health emergency.

Creating humane prison conditions is one of today’s greatest challenges, as penitentiary systems remain closed and hidden from the public in many countries. This edited volume studies the development of social work and health services in the penitentiary systems of Central Asia and China in the context of ongoing prison reform.
