Leo is widowed and has returned with her teenage son, Rob, to 'The Old Harper Place', a ranch in Tennessee, which belonged to her beloved grandmother. There she meets again, her childhood love, Richard Montinelli (Rick). Her story is one of personal maturing and liberation as she learns from her past and from the fresh experiences which come her way. Leo's former boss, hard-bitten townie, Cindy, comes to stay and responds to the passionate, vibrant atmosphere at 'The Old Harper Place'. A new way forward emerges for her too and likewise for Rick, Jeff, Rob, Jenny among others. We learn much about ranch life - the hard, physical work and the 'given' of gun ownership. More crucially we can ourselves be liberated by this story, surely the author's ambition.
