“Stop!” I didn’t mean to scream. The microphone picked up my voice, and my hands trembled as I removed the headset, staring at the two screens before me. One displayed the text, while the other showed a frozen scene. I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath, then opened them again. The boy named Reggie was still there, watching Bree too closely—he didn’t belong; I hadn’t created him. My legs shook as I backed away, overwhelmed by unsettling possibilities. I had worked hard to obtain the narration device, proving I wasn’t a target, but it was all in vain. The Rogue Narrator had infiltrated my story. The narration device, discovered during virtual reality research, revolutionized the entertainment industry. Authors could narrate stories that would produce books, audiobooks, and movie footage reflecting the original text. Initially, anyone could order a device, but a disastrous experiment by five scientists led to four deaths and one coma, resulting in strict regulations on the device's distribution. Junior knows the reasons behind these laws, which is why Bree is unaware she’s a character in a story. However, when a rogue narrator hacks into the system, chaos ensues. Junior must decide whether to adhere to the strict laws for her safety or risk everything to protect the characters she loves.
