This book addresses the "Currency question" in British India, which ultimately led to the establishment of the Reserve Bank of India. Authored by the "Father of Economics of India," it is a significant contribution to the field. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (1891-1956), known as Babasaheb, was a prominent Indian jurist, economist, politician, and social reformer. He played a crucial role in the Modern Buddhist Movement and advocated against social discrimination faced by Untouchables (Dalits), women, and laborers. As Independent India's first law minister and the principal architect of the Constitution, Ambedkar was a distinguished scholar with degrees from Columbia University and the London School of Economics. His early career included roles as an economist, professor, and lawyer, while his later years were marked by political activism, campaigning for India's independence, and advocating for the rights of Dalits. In 1956, he converted to Buddhism, leading to mass conversions among Dalits. The book, first published in 1923, quickly went out of print due to high demand. Although Ambedkar shifted focus to law and politics, he planned to release an updated edition of the History of Indian Currency and Banking, with this work as the first volume. He assures readers that the original text remains relevant and promises a timely release of the second volume.
