“He mea hoomanao no na hana oia au i hala, a he mea hoi e poina ole ai i na mamo o keia la a mau aku.” This serves as a memorial for past events, ensuring that future generations will never forget. Nā Hoʻonanea o ka Manawa, translated as Pleasurable Pastimes, is a captivating collection of stories and life descriptions from the northern region of Kona on the island of Hawaiʻi. These moʻolelo from Kekaha Wai ʻOle O Nā Kona detail hundreds of wahi pana (storied sites) and include extensive listings of moon phases, calendrics, counting methods, and plant names, making it a rich repository of local knowledge and cultural traditions. Starting on September 13, 1923, a series of articles titled Na Hoonanea o ka Manawa was published weekly in the Hawaiian-language newspaper Ka Hoku o Hawaii until August 28, 1924. The author, J. W. H. Isaac Kihe, writing as Ka ʻOhu Haʻaheo I Nā Kuahiwi ʻEkolu, was a dedicated contributor who aimed to preserve the cultural knowledge and practices of his homeland. By documenting this information, he sought to prevent its loss and provide a vital resource for his contemporaries and future generations. A century later, this book compiles the complete collection of articles with English translations by Kilika Bennett and Puakea Nogelmeier, along with indexes of named places, people, winds, rains, plants, and animals. In an era focused on remembering and revitalizing Native Hawaiian knowledge and practices
