This monograph results from eight years of bibliographical and field research on various behavioral ecology aspects of Palaearctic falcons. It aims to provide a clear overview of the biology and ecology of these species, complementing earlier work on the Lanner falcon. Over the past two decades, publications on falcons have surged, alongside contributions from both academics and nature enthusiasts. Previous literature often focused on identification, neglecting behavioral and ecological insights, with much research confined to the academic community. Conversely, basic data is widely available in local publications. While some falcon species, like kestrels, are easily observed, others are rare and localized. Understanding their survival strategies requires a comprehensive perspective. This work explores these strategies through essential chapters covering the genus Falco, genetics, evolution, and morphological traits. Subsequent chapters discuss reproductive strategies, competition, resource exploitation, dispersal patterns, communication, and sociality. A primary goal is to create an accessible yet scholarly reference source. By understanding common species, a framework can be established for rarer and threatened falcon species.
