I keď autornie je vždy historicky presný, podal v jednotlivých románoch svojej ságy verný obraz dejín rodného kraja a vzostupu i úpadku jeho obyvateľov. Compsonovci a Sartorisovci — to je ten aristokratický juh, ktorý sa prežil a na jeho miesto prichádzajú bezohľadní Snopesovci, nepoznajúci v honbe za materiálnym prospechom nijaké zábrany.

Kmíni sú posledným románom Williama Faulknera, nositeľa Nobelovej ceny. Vyšli krátko pred autorovou smrťou roku 1962 s podtitulom Reminiscencia. A okamžite sa zaradili medzi klasické diela humoru, ktoré sa budú čítať znovu a znovu. Prezrádzať priveľa o deji by bolo voči čitateľovi nezdvorilé. Je to knižka, ktorej dej sa rúti vpred závratným tempom. Môžeme však povedať toľko, že jedného dňa v roku 1905 si jedenásťročný Lucius Priest „vypožičal“ dedkovo auto za tichej spoluúčasti svojich dvoch starších priateľov — indiánskeho miešanca Boona Hogganbecka a černocha Neda McCaslina. Události v Zádušní mši, jak se dílo v originální verzi jmenuje, jsou zasazeny do listopadu 1937 a březnu 1938, odehrávají se tedy osm let po událostech ze Svatyně. Hra je Camusovou dramatizací Faulknerovy prózy.

Román líčí se směsí humoru a hořkosti život a společenský vzestup rodiny Snopesů ve státě Mississipi na sklonku 19. stol. Do vesnice vzdálené 40km od Jefersonu, kde dosud panují patriarchální časy a kterou řídí smírčí soudce Varner, se přistěhuje rodina Snopesů. Flem Snopes nastoupí jako příručí v soudcově krámě. Dovede chladnokrevně využívat slabosti druhých ve svůj prospěch. Ožení se soudcovou dcerou, která čeká dítě s jiným mužem a v závěru románu se s celou rodinou stěhuje do Jeffersonu. Postupně se do vesnice přistěhuje řada příbuzných, kteří brzy vládnou celému kraji. Jednání Snopesů sleduje a ironicky komentuje podomní obchodník Ratliff, který rozpozná rozpínavost celé rodiny, ale ani on ji nezabrání.

Panské sídlo obsahuje tři části nazvané: Mink, Linda a Flem. Zachycuje život na americkém venkově v Yoknapatawphském kraji s hlavním centrem Jeffersonem, v němž najdeme mnoho podobností s mississippským Oxfordem, od r. 1937 - do r. 1946. Jsou zde zaznamenány životní osudy lidí, myšlenky a postoje obyvatel k místním i světovým událostem.

Svůj první román Prapory v prachu napsal William Faulkner v devětadvaceti letech. Tento příběh jižanského patricijského rodu z období krátce po ukončení americké občanské války, zabývající se otázkami cti, smrti, rasismu a touhy po přežití, však poprvé vyšel v plném znění až v roce 1978. Předtím po mnoha odmítnutích v jiných nakladatelstvích musel Faulkner přistoupit na to, že román zkrátí a kniha nakonec vyšla v roce 1929 v redukované verzi pod názvem Sartoris.
