This book examines how the legacy of colonialism continues to shape global migration, despite the apparent end of overtly racist immigration policies. The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 marked a significant shift in American immigration law, eliminating explicit racial discrimination that had begun in 1790. By the 1980s, many countries had followed suit, leading to the belief in a colorblind immigration system. However, this work challenges that belief, revealing persistent racial inequalities in migration. Andrew Rosenberg argues that contemporary immigration policies, while portrayed as objective and aimed at restricting dangerous migrants, are still influenced by race. He connects the violence and institutional failures caused by colonialism and White supremacy to the current perception of certain migrants as undesirable. The author illustrates how postcolonial states are entrenched in a Western framework that demands they continuously assert their sovereignty, often through stringent border controls that disproportionately affect non-White migrants. Using original quantitative evidence, this book emphasizes that addressing international migration issues requires confronting the brutal history of colonialism and its ongoing impact on racial dynamics in migration policies.
