For Judy Lipson, her sisters were her compass—constant, champions, and competitors. For thirty years, she suppressed the grief of losing her two beloved sisters: Jane, who died in a car accident at twenty-two, and Margie, who succumbed to a long battle with anorexia and bulimia at thirty-five. It wasn't until 2011 that Judy began her journey to mourn for both sisters. She realized that siblings who lose loved ones often become the forgotten mourners, left to care for their parents and children while their own grief takes a back seat. Through her involvement in a complicated grief study, Judy learned to restore her well-being and cherish happy memories of her sisters, especially their shared passion for figure skating. By keeping her sisters' memories alive, she found peace. To honor them, Judy created the Celebration of Sisters, an annual ice skating fundraiser benefiting Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. This narrative illustrates how Judy transformed her memories and their love for skating into a source of strength. When she performs on the ice, she feels Margie and Jane guiding her, whispering encouragement. This is a poignant story of love, grief, and the journey of moving forward, even years after loss.
