Before Childwall and Gateacre became part of Liverpool's urban sprawl in the 20th century, they were rural settlements on the city's outskirts. The modern era brought significant changes, erasing much of the ancient landscape with new roads, housing estates, and shopping centers. To uncover this forgotten social and physical tableau, the author has meticulously studied records spanning over 400 years, including the surviving documents from the lost manors of Childwall and Little Woolton. These records reveal the workings of the old manor court and provide insights into the lives of the inhabitants of these now-obsolete townships. The book pays particular attention to the alehouses of the Tudor, Stuart, Cromwellian, and Georgian eras that once thrived in present-day Childwall, Gateacre, Belle Vale, and Netherley, detailing their locations and operators. It also explores the histories of surviving pubs like the Childwall Abbey, the Black Bull, and the Bear and Staff, as well as Victorian beer houses such as the Brown Cow and John Blackburn’s House, along with Gateacre’s Georgian brewery. The narratives of these old townships and alehouses are rich with drama, humor, and tragedy, offering a glimpse into a bygone age. This work presents a fresh perspective on the history of Little Woolton and Childwall, rediscovering a lost social and physical landscape.
