Every 90 seconds, a woman is sexually assaulted, and in that same timeframe, another experiences domestic violence from an intimate partner. Alarmingly, every sixteen hours, one of these partners kills a woman. Nearly 20% of women are stalked, and 1 in 16 is raped during their first sexual encounter. Despite these shocking statistics, many view such violence as someone else's issue. However, violence against women intersects with critical societal concerns like healthcare, education access, immigration, gun policies, economic security, and criminal justice reform—issues that affect us all daily. The author argues that to combat violence against women, we must redefine our approach, moving beyond the notion that it solely involves the abuser and the victim. She highlights how violence against women is linked to broader societal problems. For instance, when women seek emergency care due to violence, it burdens our healthcare system with preventable costs. Additionally, the threat of violence drives women to flee their homes, impacting immigration patterns. This violence also contributes to poverty, affecting the economy. By addressing this complexity, the author believes we can mobilize ordinary people to combat violence against women, ultimately making progress on various significant issues we care about.
