Set on Prince Edward Island, the novel follows Eric Marshall, a young teacher who falls in love with Kilmeny, a mute girl with perfect hearing. Their relationship deepens as he visits her, but she initially rejects his proposal, fearing her disability would burden him. A turning point occurs when Eric's friend, a throat doctor, reveals that Kilmeny's ability to speak may emerge from a strong emotional need.
