Born into a Brahmin family in Calcutta, Rabindranath Tagore emerged as India's literary voice, gaining international acclaim after W.B. Yeats championed his poem Gitanjali. A Nobel Prize laureate in 1913, he uniquely bridged Eastern and Western cultures through his poetry, short stories, plays, and essays. Tagore founded Visva Bharati, a school blending Hindu and Western education, and his musical compositions became national anthems for India and Bangladesh. His artistic legacy includes paintings displayed in museums worldwide.
