Focusing on a 19-year-old patient with an intense fear of elevators, this book details an intervention using systematic desensitization. The treatment includes progressive muscle relaxation, a hierarchy of anxiety-inducing situations, and both imagined and real exposure to the feared stimulus over ten sessions. Utilizing a Univariate Multiconditional design from Applied Behavior Analysis, the research demonstrates a significant reduction in problem behaviors from the pre-treatment to post-treatment phases, showcasing the effectiveness of the approach.
