Language choice in Côte d'Ivoire: A sociolinguistic study

The study explores the language dynamics in Côte d'Ivoire, focusing on the coexistence of local and European languages within multilingual communities. It investigates the population's language choices, influenced by factors like history, politics, and economics, using data collected through questionnaires and analyzed with Carol Myers-Scotton's marking model. Findings indicate that French dominates formal communication, while local languages are used informally based on context. The research highlights the Ivorian language policy's preference for French, reinforcing its status as the dominant language.
