Mitochondrial dysfunction is intricately linked to the inhibition of Na+-K+ ATPase, leading to several detrimental effects. This process causes the opening of the PT pore, disrupting the hydrogen gradient and uncoupling the respiratory chain, which in turn affects ATP generation due to decreased magnesium levels. The resulting overproduction of superoxide ions further exacerbates mitochondrial damage and is associated with conditions like Parkinson's disease, neuronal aging, and free radical-related oncogenesis.
