Characteristics of the Lomako-Yokokala Wildlife Reserve

Set between the Lomako and Yokokala rivers, the Lomaoko-Yokokala Wildlife Reserve is a vital ecological area established in 2006, covering 3.625 km². It is home to the Kitawalists, a religious group challenging the Congolese state's authority. The reserve boasts diverse habitats and supports various wildlife, including 23 large mammal species, with 8 fully protected. However, agriculture and hunting by locals pose threats to its biodiversity. The reserve serves as a natural laboratory for studying ecology and managing biodiversity, featuring bonobos, Congolese peacocks, and forest elephants.
