By 2005, it accounted for 33% of total fish production, reflecting a significant shift from capture fisheries. This sector plays a crucial role in socio-economic development, particularly in India, providing income, employment, and a source of affordable, nutritious food while stimulating related industries. Notably, one in three fish consumed worldwide is now farm-raised.
