The Social Life of Literature in Revolutionary Cuba

Focusing on the social functions of literature in contemporary Cuba, this study examines its role through the lenses of policymakers, writers, and readers. It highlights how cultural policy has blended elite and mass culture, emphasizing literature's social value over aesthetic or political concerns. Unlike traditional analyses that view literature as either politically subservient or resistant, this work reveals its dynamic role in identity construction and self-definition within a shifting market-oriented context. The study spans from 1959 to present, featuring contemporary case studies that illustrate these themes.
