The study focuses on the syntactic and semantic features of adverb clauses in English, addressing the complexities of language research due to numerous uncontrollable variables. It emphasizes the need for adequacy criteria—observational, descriptive, and explanatory—to effectively explain grammatical concepts. The author critiques traditional and structuralist grammars for failing to meet these criteria and adopts a generative-transformational approach to analyze adverbial clauses, aiming for a more comprehensive understanding of their structure and function.
