Set in 1819, the story follows Baron Philippe de Sucy and Marquis d'Albon as they get lost during a hunting trip near L'Isle-Adam. Their encounter with a mysterious young woman, Comtesse Stephanie de Vandieres, who calls out "Adieu" before fleeing, leaves de Sucy fainting. Afterward, d'Albon learns from the manor's owner that Stephanie, who is revealed to be his niece, suffers from insanity. The narrative explores themes of mystery and the impact of mental illness within a philosophical framework.
