Hersz's Story: From a Polish Shtetl to the Argonne Forest

Fleeing pogroms, an Orthodox Jewish teenager leaves his late 19th-Century Polish shtetl and makes his way to New York. In an ironic trick of fate, having finally established himself in his adopted country, he is drafted into the American army for service in World War I, where he experiences terrors far worse than those from which he fled.
