Pope.L (born 1955 in Newark, USA; died 2023 in Chicago, USA) was one of the most important political conceptual artists in the USA. Among his most famous works were the crawl performances, in which the artist - sometimes in a business suit and with a dandelion in his hand, sometimes in a Superman costume - crawled for miles on his hands and knees through the streets of New York and asked people to look downwards . He used his body to expose inequalities and power imbalances in society. He also worked in the media of painting, sculpture, installation and photography. His practice was always deeply rooted in philosophy and theater; since the 1970s, Pope.L has pioneered the topics of language, gender, racism and community. Hospital shows a cross-section of the artist's oeuvre, who died too early, and documents his last exhibition at the South London Gallery. With an essay by Legacy Russell, an introduction by Margot Heller and an interview with the artist by Judith Wilkinson. (Verlagsangaben)
