Environmental and Financial Performance Evaluation in 3D Printing Using MFCA and LCA

This book outlines a methodology for evaluating environmental and financial performance in 3D printing processes through MFCA and LCA, structured in seven key steps. These steps include: a) identifying the analysis problem and defining printing parameters; b) defining the product to be printed; c) preparing the printing process flow diagram; d) determining the lifespan of the printed product; e) collecting data for LCA implementation, such as mass and energy balances; f) gathering data for MFCA implementation, including mass and energy balances, and associated costs; and g) conducting a comparative assessment of financial and environmental performance. To illustrate this methodology, a real case study compares two materials—Polylactic Acid (PLA) and Polyethylene Glycol Polyterephthalate (PETG)—used in FDM technology for printing a clearance gauge for joint spacing control in a Brazilian automobile industry. The methodology's development and application demonstrate its utility for 3D printing users across various fields, aiding in decisions that optimize both financial and environmental outcomes.
