The presence of telescopes atop the Pope's Summer residence in Castel Gandolfo is no coincidence; for over a century, the Vatican has championed astronomical research. This commitment dates back to the Gregorian Reform of the Calendar in 1582 and the early days of universities, where astronomy was essential for those pursuing philosophy or theology. The Church has always viewed the study of the heavens as a means to understand the Creator. In celebration of the International Year of Astronomy, the Vatican Observatory presents a collection of stunning images from its telescopes alongside the wisdom of the Popes, reaffirming its dedication to the exploration of the cosmos as a pathway to divine knowledge.
