This guide is part of a series on natural history in biologically rich countries, examining environments under pressure from industry and agriculture while addressing conservation and ecological issues. It celebrates the beauty and diversity of South Africa's unspoilt areas and highlights renowned wild places. Approximately 340 photographs capture the cycles of nature across regions, showcasing everything from tiny insects and birds to larger mammals, along with fruits, flowers, and sweeping landscapes. Indigenous peoples are also depicted in their natural environments. The introduction discusses geology, plant and animal life, conservation, and the future of a wild South Africa. Each chapter focuses on a specific region, including the Eastern Coastal Plain, a wetland of extraordinary diversity; the Eastern and Western Coast zones; the Bushveld, rich in wildlife; the Deserts of the Karoo and Kalahari; and the Mountains, from the Drakensberg massif to the Cape's dramatic fold mountains. The emphasis is on the untouched natural beauty of the land, with each section highlighting its unique vegetation, animal and bird life, and landscapes.
