Based on the eighteenth-century The Beggar's Opera by John Gay, the play is a satire on the bourgeois society of the Weimar Republic, but set in a mock-Victorian Soho. With Kurt Weill's music, which was one of the earliest and most successful attempts to introduce the jazz idiom into the theatre, it became a popular hit throughout the western world. Reviewing the work of the Berlin Ensemble, Harold Clurman has written: "The play which most strongly stamped on my mind a sense of Brecht's great stature as an artist of the theatre was Galileo ." And again: " Galileo is entirely contemporary in view of the events of our atomic age and in relation to certain problems of conscience." The adaptation is the famous one which was brought to completion by Brecht himself, working with Charles Laughton, who played Galileo in the first two American productions of the play (Hollywood and New York, 1947). Sedmý svazek Brechtova díla přináší nejprve Krejcarový román (1934), vycházející z divadelní hry Die Dreigroschenoper (1928) a z The Beggar's Opera (1728) Johna Gaye. Děj je zasazen do Anglie roku 1902; autor se zde snaží ukázat, „že v kapitalistickém světě vše je obchod, že se obchoduje sbídou, s láskou, s justicí, s obchodem, že jeden prodává druhého, že ten, jenž splnil krátkodobé poslání, je bez milosti odklizen“. Svazek dále obsahuje fragment románu Obchody pana Julia Caesara (1949), v němž je římský vojevůdce odhalován jako člověk, který zná moc a sílu peněz.

Krejcarový román patří k nejsvéraznějším dílům moderní literatury. Autor zde podává sociálně kritickou analýzu odcizeného světa kapitalistické společnosti, v němž se střetají otázky morálky, politiky a ekonomie.

Hra zachycuje tragický příběh z občanské války ve Španělsku a na osudu Terezy Carrarové ukazuje, že v boji s fašismem není jiné volby než stát na jedné nebo druhé straně. Pod vlivem konservativní výchovy a z obavy o své syny postavila se paní Carrarová na stanovisko neutrála a ocitla se tak v konfliktu se svou rodinou i s celou vesnicí. Teprve osud vlastního syna, který ji uposlechl, neúčastnil se boje a přesto byl fašisty zavražděn, odhaluje jí hloubku jejího omylu a přivádí ji do řad bojovníků za demokracii a pokrok.

Roku 1940 se podařilo emigrantovi Bertoltu Brechotvi nalézt asyl ve Finsku. Měl za sebou už Dánsko a Finsko, týden poté, co Hitler přepadl Skandinávii dorazil do Helsinek, kde pobyl 13 měsíců. – V neútulné hospodě helsinského nádraží se čas od času scházejí dva emigranti, jejichž rozhovory zapsal Brecht v naší knížce, která vyšla až léta po jeho smrti roku 1961. Fyzik Ziffel a dělník Kalle proberou ve svých rozpravách – trochu švejkovských – všechno od války a hrdinství přes Hegla a humor až po lásku k bližnímu svému a pornografii. Představují svým způsobem dva příznačné německé osudy let třicátých a čtyřicátých, ale v knížce nejde především o obraz doby, ani o psychologicko-společenské studie. Její půvab i smysl je v jiskření nespoutaného, pronikavého intelektu, v radosti z přemýšlení samého, jež nezná tabu ani hranic. Nelze říci, že bychom právě toho měli u nás nadbytek.

Set in the stockyards and meat market of Chicago, the play reveals the contradictions of society exacerbated by advanced capitalism. Johanna Dark, a Salvation Army soldier, witnesses the plight of workers excluded and starving due to the meat factories. In her quest to understand the reasons behind their exclusion, she encounters the meat king, Pierpont Mauler, who unsuccessfully tries to win her over to his cause. Ultimately, Johanna, also rejected by the poor, meets her demise in the stockyards. The play makes the "entangled processes" transparent, illustrating their underlying laws and using them as a means to drive the events forward.

Bertolt Brecht wurde am 10. Februar 1898 in Augsburg geboren und starb am 14. August 1956 in Berlin. Von 1917 bis 1918 studierte er an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Naturwissenschaften, Medizin und Literatur. Sein Studium musste er allerdings bereits im Jahr 1918 unterbrechen, da er in einem Augsburger Lazarett als Sanitätssoldat eingesetzt wurde. Bereits während seines Studiums begann Brecht Theaterstücke zu schreiben. Ab 1922 arbeitete er als Dramaturg an den Münchener Kammerspielen. Von 1924 bis 1926 war er Regisseur an Max Reinhardts Deutschem Theater in Berlin. 1933 verließ Brecht mit seiner Familie und Freunden Berlin und flüchtete über Prag, Wien und Zürich nach Dänemark, später nach Schweden, Finnland und in die USA. Neben Dramen schrieb Brecht auch Beiträge für mehrere Emigrantenzeitschriften in Prag, Paris und Amsterdam. 1948 kehrte er aus dem Exil nach Berlin zurück, wo er bis zu seinem Tod als Autor und Regisseur tätig war.
