Als Adam Czerniakow am 23.9.1939 zum Vorsitzenden der Warschauer Jüdischen Kultusgemeinde ernannt wurde, war er sich der Schwere der Aufgabe bewusst, aber er ahnte nicht, welche Bürde, welch übermenschliche Anstrengungen ihm dieses Amt auferlegen würde. In winziger Schrift notierte er fast drei Jahre lang, was er sah, was er miterlebte, was er tat. Sein Tagebuch ist ein einzigartiges Dokument der Machtlosigkeit gegenüber der deutschen Schreckensherrschaft, aber auch des Muts und der Menschlichkeit in einer ausweglosen Lage.
