    Helen Kellerová sa nenechala zväzovať okolnosťami. Po tom, ako v 19 mesiacoch oslepla a ohluchla na šarlach, sa naučila čítať (v niekoľkých jazykoch) a dokonca rozprávať, pričom v roku 1904 s vyznamenaním absolvovala Radcliffe College. Už ako študentka napísala svoju autobiografiu „Príbeh môjho života“. Jej úspechy sú obdivuhodné, najmä vzhľadom na dobu, kedy len málo žien chodilo na vysokú školu a ľudia s postihnutím boli často odsunutí na okraj spoločnosti. Kellerová napísala 13 kníh, nespočet článkov a zasvätila svoj život sociálnej reforme, pričom sa zasadzovala o práva postihnutých po celom svete. Jej radostný duch a oslava objavovania vynikajú v jej diele a pomáhajú čitateľom lepšie vnímať krásy sveta okolo seba.
