Set against the tumult of the French Revolution, the story follows Dr. Manette, who spends eighteen years imprisoned in the Bastille. Upon his release, he reunites with his daughter Lucie, raised in London as an orphan. Lucie falls in love with Charles Darnay, an emigrant fleeing his family's legacy, while Sydney Carton, an English lawyer, harbors unrequited love for her. As secrets about Darnay's past emerge, the characters return to a chaotic France, where their lives are endangered by the revolution's mob rule.
