In July 2018, the verdict of the NSU murder trial was announced in Munich, concluding a five-year legal process that profoundly challenged the democratic understanding of those involved. Beate Zschäpe, the only survivor of the NSU terror cell, along with four supporters, was sentenced. Over eleven years, the NSU committed right-wing extremist murders, resulting in ten victims. The series ended in 2011 with the discovery of the bodies of Uwe Böhnhardt and Uwe Mundlos, prompting the judiciary to recognize the connections between the victims—who had long faced suspicion—and the extremist movement. From fall 2014 to spring 2017, documentary photographer Paula Markert traveled across Germany, documenting individuals and locations linked to the NSU. Her images of crime scenes and the murderers’ retreats are paired with portraits of victims, lawyers, and institutions. Accompanied by twelve selected text fragments and interview excerpts, Markert’s work creates a complex portrayal of the events and highlights the many unresolved inconsistencies that continue to challenge the state’s duty of care and the role of the Federal Republic's domestic intelligence service. This printed and bound book aims to preserve the trial and the victims against the rapid digital forgetfulness of our era.
