The main character of the novel is the priest Urban Grandier, a free spirit and independent thinker who, despite his clerical garb, captivates many women with his striking appearance and physical strength. Through varying perspectives, including the diary of a secondary character and viewpoints from different main characters, as well as a lens from the 20th century, the intrigues surrounding the priest are illuminated in a town in southwestern France. When a convent is besieged by demons, the exorcist repeatedly extracts the name Grandier from the hallucinating nuns. The narrative explores themes of desire, power, and the intersection of faith and reason, revealing the complexities of human nature and societal expectations during a tumultuous period.
