The story follows Oliver, a young orphan born in a workhouse who faces the brutal realities of life after his mother's death. Despite his grim circumstances, he escapes to London, where he is drawn into a gang of pickpockets, offering him a semblance of survival. His first attempt at crime nearly lands him in prison, but a kind stranger intervenes, providing temporary refuge. However, his brief respite is shattered when he is forcibly returned to the gang, leading to a disastrous burglary that leaves him wounded and abandoned.
