The Great War is over. Private Edward Burne, awaiting execution for desertion, is sent on a special detail to recover a body from one of the many temporary graveyards littered across the French countryside.He witnesses an unusual ceremony involving a group of senior British army officers. His one aim is to escape and seizing an opportune moment he absconds and makes his way back to England.Hunted as a deserter and traitor, Private Burne evades the military and civilian police until he is rescued by Edith, who recognises him as ‘William', her husband, who was reported as killed in action in 1917.This story, is part mystery, part thriller and part social commentary on the class system of England.
