In 1933 Berlin, American writer Althea James is invited by Joseph Goebbels to join a cultural exchange program. For a girl from a small Maine town, Berlin appears vibrant and modern, yet her perspective shifts when she meets a captivating woman who introduces her to a group of resisters, challenging her beliefs about her hosts and herself. By 1936, Hannah Brecht has fled to Paris, but finds no escape from the anti-Semitism and Nazi sympathizers she thought she left behind. Haunted by her role in her family's betrayal, she immerses herself in work at the German Library of Burned Books, believing in the power of literature to combat rising fascism. When a close friend opts for action over words, Hannah faces a critical choice about the stories worth risking her life for. In 1944 New York, Vivian Childs, mourning her husband Edward's death in the war, fights against a senator's censorship of Armed Service Editions, essential paperbacks sent to soldiers. Through letters from Edward, she understands their significance and realizes that to win her battle, she must confront the senator's propaganda with her own narrative, which intertwines with the enigmatic woman managing the American Library of Nazi-Banned Books in Brooklyn. The paths of these three women will intersect, forever altering their lives.
