Edgar Allan Poe is often perceived as a solitary figure, immersed in his imagination and detached from the world around him. However, he was always in a specific place, albeit not for long. This exploration of Poe’s life highlights his transient existence in American cities such as Richmond, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York. The narrative reveals how his surroundings significantly influenced his outlook and career, primarily shaped by the urban landscapes of America. Poe's work was closely linked to the burgeoning American magazine industry, prompting him to create not only stories and poems but also journalism and editorials aimed at an urban audience. His proximity to urban slavery in Richmond exposed him to the harsh realities of slave jails and auction houses. In Philadelphia, he encountered a city grappling with its violent tendencies. As suburbs began to emerge as alternatives to city life, Poe experimented with living on the then-rural Upper West Side of Manhattan and later in the Bronx.
