Aristophanes, a pioneer of satire and comedy, presents five of his surviving plays in this collection. "The Wasps" critiques the Athenian general Cleon and the judicial system. "The Thesmophoriazusae" features women plotting revenge against Euripides for his negative portrayal of them. "The Frogs" follows Dionysus's quest to revive Euripides to enhance Athenian tragedy.
