Claude Wheeler grapples with his identity and aspirations in a restrictive environment shaped by his devout upbringing and a controlling mother. His desire for a broader education clashes with his reality at a private religious college. Struggling with a troubled marriage and a lack of direction, he enlists in World War I, where he is commissioned as a lieutenant. Deployed to France during the war's final months, he discovers a sense of purpose that has eluded him throughout his life.
