The year is 1863. The American Civil War is leaving a bloody trail across the nation as Peter Wake, born and bred in the snowy North, joins the Union Navy as a volunteer officer, arriving in steamy Florida for duty with the East Gulf Blockading Squadron. Through Wake is an experienced sailor, he is new to the politics and illicit liaisons that war creates among men. Assigned to the tiny armed sloop Rosalie, Captain Wake commands a group of seasoned seamen pursing Confederate blockade-runners and sympathizers from Florida's coastal waters to near the remote out-islands of the Bahamas. Falling in love with the daughter of a Confederate zealot, Wake risks his reputation and career. Making the ugly decisions of war, even in a beautiful tropical paradise, takes him to the edge of honor.
