At a midlife crossroads, Jim McCloskey's life changed dramatically when he became a chaplain at Trenton State Prison in 1980. Disenchanted with his previous career as a management consultant, he sought a new path at Princeton Theological Seminary. Among the inmates he ministered to was Jorge de los Santos, a heroin addict convicted of murder, who insisted on his innocence. Over time, McCloskey came to believe him and, despite lacking legal training, dedicated himself to de los Santos's case. After two years of tireless effort, he achieved de los Santos's exoneration, which ignited McCloskey's passion for justice. This led to the establishment of Centurion Ministries, the first organization in the U.S. focused on overturning wrongful convictions. With a team of forensic experts, lawyers, and volunteers, Centurion has successfully freed 63 prisoners and continues its mission. McCloskey’s journey, detailed in this inspirational narrative, reflects the struggles and triumphs of those unjustly imprisoned.
