This volume is the study of the collage works of the painter Max Ernst. A leader of the Dadaist and Surrealist movements in Cologne, Zurich and Paris, Ernst used collage to transform existing visual material into a rich, fantastic, surreal world. Werner Spies, a friend of Ernst and a leading authority on his work, has researched the sources from which Ernst took his raw material - including periodicals, catalogues, newspapers and journals - and examines the techniques he used to create his remarkable images and collage novels.
