Focusing on the evolution of tonality, this work showcases Carl Dahlhaus's expertise in harmony theory, offering insights into modern concepts while revisiting influential theorists like Rameau and Schenker. It juxtaposes traditional chordal composition with the less recognized intervallic composition, highlighting its significance in the development of polyphonic music during the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. Through numerous quotations from historical treatises, Dahlhaus illustrates how early music was propelled by interval progressions rather than chord progressions.
