Set against the backdrop of Northwestern Ontario, this narrative follows the intertwined lives of Elmer Wabason, a Cree man, and Gilbert Bertrand, a white man, who grow up just miles apart yet remain strangers until World War II. The story explores themes of soldier camaraderie, women's strength, and the effects of racism, as both families face adversity, corruption, and the pursuit of justice culminating in a significant trial in 1965. Their resilience shines through as they achieve remarkable milestones despite overwhelming challenges.
