Set against the vibrant backdrop of San Francisco's Chinatown during the 1940 Chinese New Year celebrations, the story follows Miranda Corbie, a determined private investigator. When she discovers the murdered body of Eddie Takahashi, she faces opposition from the local Chamber of Commerce and the police, who want to suppress the case. Undeterred, Miranda navigates through the city's diverse neighborhoods, including Little Osaka and a Southern Gothic bordello, in her quest for justice, revealing the darker undercurrents of her community.
