The author, Gustave Aimard, known for his extensive works on Latin America and the American frontier, had a complex family background. Born Olivier Aimard in Paris, he was the son of François Sébastiani de la Porta, a general in Napoleon's army, and Mme. de Faudoas, whose marriage was not to Aimard's father. His upbringing was influenced by significant historical figures, including his grandmother, the Duchess de Coigny, who raised his sister after their mother's death.
