The initial expectation of a straightforward update proved overly optimistic, as nearly every paragraph from the previous edition required modification. What was anticipated to be a few months of work extended into nearly a year. Despite the ongoing evolution of the country, every effort has been made to ensure the content is as current as possible, acknowledging that no publication can achieve complete accuracy in such a rapidly changing environment. Special thanks are extended to those who contributed to this revision, particularly Mrs. Samuel Gouling, whose meticulous proofreading and extensive knowledge of China greatly enhanced the book's value. The publisher, Forgotten Books, specializes in reproducing rare and classic works, utilizing advanced technology to preserve the original format while addressing imperfections in aged copies. While some flaws from the original may still appear, the majority have been successfully repaired, with remaining imperfections intentionally retained to maintain the historical integrity of the work.
