Kelville-by-the-Sea, a seemingly tranquil seaside town on Scotland's northeast coast, welcomes a new senior police officer, Helen Griffen, who hopes for a peaceful final posting before retirement. However, her first weeks reveal a complex web of mysteries: a sergeant living under an alias in the station, a seven-year-old missing person case, an enigmatic American ballet star, and a local family's panic over DNA tests. As Helen navigates these challenges, she grapples with shifting moral boundaries, especially as she involves her private investigator son, Adam, to discreetly look into the disappearance of a teenage girl. With her predecessor having fled to Spain, Helen's trust is limited. Together, she and Adam uncover the town's hidden history, tracing back to a World War One German soldier and a Scottish nurse who built a glass business, igniting a series of events that still affect the community. Adam's suspicions focus on an elderly man known for his contemplative cliffside visits, who is tied to both the missing girl and Helen's predecessor. Complications arise as Helen learns that the elderly man's son is her former boss and his grandson is her sergeant, both entangled in the case. The seemingly innocuous sea glass collected by visitors carries its own tragic story, linked to a war memorial. Helen realizes that pursuing justice for past wrongs may only reignite old conflicts. Meanwhile, a prologue introduces Alistair, a
